I like Scott Derrickson‘s movies and he’s a fun guy to follow on Twitter and for those reasons I’m not sure how to feel when it comes to the news he will direct Marvel’s Dr. Strange.
It’s certainly a gig that can raise his profile and it’s also a nice change of scenery as he’s been directing horror films for some time now, including 2012’s Sinister and his upcoming film this summer Deliver Us from Evil (7/2), but is that worth the trade-off that is working under Marvel’s thumb?
Kung Fu Panda scribes, Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger, were last known to be writing the script when names such as Mark Andrews (Brave co-director), Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) were said to be up for the directing gig. Levine, last we heard, was a possible candidate for the now-vacant Ant-Man chair.
The character in the comics is a surgeon that suffers a life-changing car accident and eventually heads to the Himalayas, gains psychic powers and saves the day, protecting the Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comic series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comic series and would appear in several other comics that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and Nick Fury.
No word on who will take on the title role, thought there was a rumor early on that Mads Mikkelsen was a contender. [Variety]
