In a curious move, Warner Bros. and MGM have announced Roland Emmerich will be returning to the world of Stargate after directing the original film in 1994, which spawned a television show three years later. Well, not only is he returning to it, he’s rebooting it in hopes of a new trilogy of films, but don’t expect it too soon.
In a press release announcing the project, it’s also mentioned how he’s currently directing Stonewall, a drama starring Jeremy Irvine and Caleb Landry Jones following the story of a young man’s political awakening amid the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York, which sparked a fight for equality and paved the way for the modern gay rights movement. After that he’ll be directing the Independence Day sequels, ID Forever Part I and Part II, back-to-back.
Once things finally get to Stargate, the goal is to launch a new feature film trilogy, reimagining the 1994, which centered on an interstellar teleportation device, found in Egypt, that leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra. There is no word on a screenwriter or a timetable, but I have to assume we shouldn’t expect the first film in this trilogy until 2017 at the earliest, but more likely 2018.
