The Kane Chronicles: Netflix adapting Rick Riordan’s trilogy novel into films
Following the official confirmation of the Percy Jackson novels being developed into Disney+ series, award-winning author Rick Riordan has announced that he has teamed up with Netflix to adapt another one of his popular novel franchises. The streaming giant is currently in the process of developing the first film adaptation of Riordan’s YA adventure trilogy novels titled The Kane Chronicles which is inspired by the Egyptian mythology.
“We have been working on this deal since last October, about the same time we started working on Percy, and I’m so glad I can now announce it! That’s all I can say for the moment, but stay tuned,” Riordan said.
First published in 2010, The Kane Chronicles trilogy began with the first novel titled The Red Pyramid, it follows the story of young siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, who after their father’s disappearance due to accidentally unleashing ancient Egyptian gods into the modern world, must set out on an adventure to save their father from Set, the god of chaos and storms. Along the way, they’ll find out the truth about their family and their connection to a secret magical order.
The official synopsis of The Red Pyramid reads: “Since their mother’s death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.
One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a “research experiment” at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.
Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them–Set–has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe–a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family, and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.”
Since the first novel’s release, it was soon then followed by 2011’s The Throne of Fire and 2012’s The Serpent’s Shadow. The trilogy is interestingly set in the same universe as the Percy Jackson novels as well as Riordan’s other popular fantasy trilogy titled Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard which centers around Norse mythology. Following their individual successes, Riordan had also released a crossover trilogy between the characters of Kane Chronicles and the Percy Jackson novels consisting of The Son of Sobek, The Staff of Serapis, and The Crown of Ptolemy.
