‘Godzilla’ is a Monster at the Box Office, Targeting $98 Million Weekend

Tracking had Godzilla coming in around $72 million, but after $9.3 million on Thursday night the film has shown no signs of slowing and will be blowing that number out of the water, as it’s on track for the largest opening of the year.

The well-marketed monster movie brought in an estimated $38.5 million on Friday with a B+ CinemaScorea, which includes $6.2 million from IMAX theaters. This puts the film on track for somewhere around $98 million, which would be larger than both the $95 million Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened with in April and the $91.6 million The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brought in only a couple weekends ago.

I will have a complete weekend update tomorrow morning, but it will be interesting to see if Godzilla could end up the year’s first $100 million opener.
