Christopher Nolan Kept ‘Interstellar’ Plot Secret from Hans Zimmer

It seems Christopher Nolan has a knack of letting everyone — the audience and his collaborators — know only what he wants them to know when it comes to his movies before what he determines to be the right time. In the case of Interstellar we still don’t know too much even though an old draft of the screenplay is floating around and the fact we know it’s about wormholes and a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass, what the synopsis calls, the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Got that? Well, that may or may not be more information than Nolan gave his Inception composer, Hans Zimmer, before he began work on the film’s score.

Speaking with British GQ (via WDEF), Zimmer said, “All I will say is this: before I began, last January, Chris said to me, ‘Hans, I will write one page of text for you. And you will give me just one day. Just write whatever comes to you from this one single page.”

What was on that page? Well, Zimmer isn’t saying, but he did add, “It [the page] wasn’t about the film… in a peculiar way, what Chris wrote down that day, and what he wanted from me, had more to do with my story than the plot of the movie. He knows how to get under my skin. That’s the game we play.”

Zimmer’s scores have become something of a highlight when it comes to Nolan’s films, his score for The Dark Knight obviously being a favorite among fans (myself included). I’m sure Zimmer will be working with the final product once he puts the entire score together, but it would be very interesting to not only know what was on that one page, but also hear what Zimmer came up with and how much of it remains in the final ensemble.

Interstellar hits theaters on November 7 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Bill Irwin, Casey Affleck, Ellen Burstyn, Mackenzie Foy, Timothée Chalamet, John Lithgow, Topher Grace, Wes Bentley, David Oyelowo, David Gyasi and Matt Damon.
