There’s Nothing Exciting about the Cinema?

I’ve really enjoyed the conversation that’s taking place in the post I wrote on Friday headlined “Let’s Stop with How Great TV is and How Bad Movies are Nowadays“, but one comment that just rolled in took me seriously be surprise. For the most part this website is, I’d say, 98% focused on movies and Ron Oneal Fresh, the reader that left the following comment, is a regular reader and contributor to the conversation in the comment section and, I would assume based on that, a fan of movies. That said, I was floored reading his opinion on today’s movies…

TV is just a better experience, from watching them to talking about them with other people. There are dozens upon dozens episodes of television that thoroughly satisfy, season that I’d rewatch in a heartbeat. Movies on the other hand, there’s really not much that hits and sticks with you — that you really love and really wanna talk about with someone else (Wolf, Short Term 12) I’m struggling here. Movies just don’t feel relevant to anything in the present, when it goes to the past it often feels insincere, there’s little to no thrills, very few times where I didn’t guess where the story thread lead or where the character arcs ended.

There’s nothing exciting about the cinema other than your favorite guys/gals (director/writer) new film. Even then, you’re occasionally left disappointed.

I don’t want to attempt to argue against this too much, because I think when Ron says there are “dozens upon dozens [of] episodes of television that thoroughly satisfy” he’s forgetting the years and years and years of movies that thoroughly satisfy, but that’s not what shocked me about the comment…

Outside of The Wolf of Wall Street and Short Term 12, Ron says he didn’t love, or find any other movies from 2013 worth talking about with someone else. I don’t know how many of 2013’s movies he’s seen, but he adds to that saying he feels today’s movies aren’t relevant and deliver little to no thrills and largely come with no sense of surprise.

Then he really takes it to the next level with his final nail… allowing for his caveat of favorite directors and writers (though he says even they disappoint him) he says, “There’s nothing exciting about the cinema.” Wow, how many of you also feel this way?
