Why is Noah’s Ark a Box in Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Noah’?

If you’ve seen pictures from Darren Aronofksy‘s Noah or any of the trailers you’ve already noticed his ark isn’t exactly what you think of when you think of a boat, most specifically it’s missing a curved hull. Well, Paramount has just released a new featurette looking at the construction of the ark and the reasoning behind its design in which production designer Mark Friedberg explains the dimensions as told in the Bible — “30 cubits high by 50 cubits wide, 300 cubits long” — to which Aronofsky adds, “It basically describes a box. It doesn’t talk about a bow, it doesn’t have to navigate. It wasn’t like Noah was trying to take the ship anywhere, it just basically has to survive the flood.”

You can watch the full featurette below and you can explore deeper into the ark at the film’s official site, which is actually cooler than I expected it to be.

Noah hits theaters on March 28.
