Michael Bay Produced Remake of Hitchcock’s ‘Birds’ Gets a Director

Have you heard the name Diederik Van Rooijen? If so you’re probably Dutch and have a familiarity with a television series titled “Penoza”, which has now been remade as ABC’s “Red Widow”, or the thriller Taped. Otherwise, he’s a complete unknown and he just might be making his Hollywood feature debut with a remake of Alfred Hitchcock‘s The Birds for Universal and producer Michael Bay‘s Platinum Dunes.

The project has been discussed I can remember with Naomi Watts tipped to take over Tippi Hedren‘s role from the ’63 original, which saw a horde of birds attacking San Francisco inhabitants. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay with word this film will likely nod more toward Daphne du Maurier‘s short story than did Hitchcock’s.

I’m not certain, but I believe this may be the first time a director has actually been attached to the project and as for Watts’ involvement, it all depends on the script.

Here’s a look at the trailer for Van Rooijen’s Taped. [THR]
