Ender’s Game dipped $1 million off its Sunday estimates to end its opening weekend with $27 million. With a budget of $110 million any chance for a sequel pretty much rests in the hands of the international audience as the highest domestic tally for any film making around $27 million on opening weekend this year is $149.2m for We’re the Millers.
Interestingly enough, when it comes to sequel talk it would seem the next film would actually be based on a new book “Ender’s Game” author Orson Scott Card is currently writing titled “Fleet School” that deals with the fallout at the end of “Ender’s Game” seeing how the second book in the current series, “Speaker of the Dead”, takes place 3,000 years after the events of Ender’s Game. Of course, we still have a long way to go before that even becomes a possibility and then again, we may not have to wait at all if Thor: The Dark World manages to force audiences to forget Ender’s Game was ever released this coming weekend.
The next new wide release this past weekend was the geriatric bachelor party, Last Vegas, which ended with $16.3 million, just a couple hundred grand off estimates and it was able to stave off Relativity’s animated Thanksgiving movie Free Birds, which dipped $400,000 off its $16.2 million Sunday estimate.
The final film in this weekend’s RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge was the limited release of About Time, which played in only 175 theaters and managed $1.07 million.
