While Paramount was forced to move Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit to January to make room for the mildly delayed release date for Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street, perhaps the dumping ground of the cinematic year will be the best place for it because nothing I’ve seen so far tells me this project has anything going for it.
The studio took full advantage of the death of the title character’s source author, Tom Clancy, and released the film’s first poster only hours after the announcement followed by a trailer later that week that didn’t exactly seem to move the dial. Now a new poster (via Den of Geek) and some accompanying pictures arrive and if I was to be asked to make a decision whether or not I wanted to see the film based on the marketing alone this would be a pass.
Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) plays Ryan, the ex-Marine turned financial analyst living in Moscow who uncovers a terrorist plot. The film co-stars Keira Knightley as Ryan’s finacee, Kenneth Branagh (who also directs) as the film’s villain, Kevin Costner, Nonso Anozie and David Paymer.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit hits theaters on January 17.
