Now this poster is a better representation of what you can expect from August: Osage County, though the tagline “Misery Loves Family” is still a little misleading as this is a very real moment in the film though the marketing seems to want you to think it’s about big laughs. The curious thing about August is that while you’ll surely laugh, you’ll laugh largely out of uncomfortability as the venom spewed throughout is just that, venomous.
Based on the play by Tracy Letts centering on the Weston family, forced to come together after a family tragedy, but this isn’t exactly a family that belongs together. Here’s how I teased my “B+” review out of Toronto:
If it weren’t for a couple of narrative hang-ups, August: Osage County would have been a film I’d quickly call one of the year’s best. Nevertheless, I loved almost every minute of the snarling and nasty dialogue with performances from the likes of Streep, Roberts, Martindale, Nicholson and Cooper that actually are some of the year’s best.
