Jason Reitman‘s films seem to just pop up at the end of the year. We know they are coming, but Paramount has held both Young Adult and now Labor Day close to the vest and, in advance of the film’s upcoming premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, we get our first look at Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin in the upcoming hostage drama.
Labor Day centers on 13-year-old Henry Wheeler (Changling‘s Gattlin Griffith) as he confronts the pangs of adolescence while struggling to be the man of the house and care for his reclusive mother, Adele (Winslet). On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry and his mother encounter Frank Chambers (Brolin), a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict. The events of this long Labor Day weekend will shape all of them for the rest of their lives. Tobey Maguire, Clark Gregg, JK Simmons, Brooke Smith and James Van Der Beek co-star.
I completely forgot about Griffith in Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and now I’m beginning to wonder if I should add him to my Supporting Actor predictions. The kid can act, that he’s proven.
Labor Day hits theaters on December 25 and I’ll assume a trailer is coming very soon.
