Christopher Nolan Offers Matthew McConaughey Lead Role in ‘Interstellar’

November 7, 2014. At that point, however, casting was unknown for the film said to depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding. Well, now we know who exactly may be taking that voyage.

Deadline.com reports Nolan has offered Matthew McConaughey the role of Cooper, the film’s lead. No other details on the character are known at this point or whether McConaughey intends to accept the offer, though it would be hard to believe anyone turning down the lead in a new Nolan feature at this point.

Beyond the logline mentioned above, word on Interstellar is that it will see a group of explorers travel through a wormhole. The script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech. Like Inception, the story is said to be “complex and multi-layered”.

The film was originally set up in 2006 with Steven Spielberg directing and Nolan’s brother, Jonathan Nolan, penning the script. It’s been reported Chris took his own spin on the previous script, though to what extent is not yet known.

Nolan is coming off a string of hits including The Dark Knight, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises so if McConaughey, who has been on a little role of his own with Magic Mike and upcoming films such as Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club, were to decline I’d be mighty surprised.
