New Clip from ‘Dredd 3D’ Paints a Familiar Picture

From the first trailer people seemed to be saying, “So this is essentially a remake of The Raid,” in response to Lionsgate’s upcoming Dredd 3D and now a new red band clip from Den of Geek seems to confirm exactly that.

I don’t make it a habit of watching clips, but I wanted to watch a little bit of this one to see if there was any legitimacy to the claim and, to my surprise, there is… a lot in fact.

Not having read the synopsis for Dredd, but having watched 38 seconds of the following clip it would seem Lena Headey (as Ma-Ma) plays a villain at the top of the food chain and Dredd (Karl Urban) and an accompanying “judge” played by Olivia Thirlby are there to take her down. Headey wields some sort of power over those that live in her particular building, I don’t know if Ma-Ma is running drugs, guns, both(?), but they seem to respond to her command just as the block dwellers in The Raid responded to the demands of Tama (Ray Sahetapy), asking to take out the group of police officers that arrived to take him down.

Blood, punching, kicking and gunfire ensued.

What will be curious is to see how it is handled and may bring further evidence to a claim made recently by a frequent RopeofSilicon commenter.

It was recently brought to my attention the look of action sequences shot for Hollywood films compared to those shot for more independent productions. While I wouldn’t necessarily call Dredd a “Hollywood film”, it’s one I would say is intended for more of a wider audience than The Raid and shot more in that “Hollywood” style, or, perhaps a better phrasing would be the faux-guerilla Hollywood style.

Have a look at the clip below, and I’m sure those that have seen The Raid will have more to say than those that haven’t, but I’m curious to hear thoughts from both sides of the argument.

Dredd hits theaters on September 21. For more on the film click here.
