I must say, these are surprising results as far as I’m concerned. Yes, everyone expected Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted to retain the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row, no big surprise there. However, I did not expect to see Prometheus in the #2 position and especially not with such poor numbers.
With an estimated $5.8 million on its second Friday, Prometheus is going to be looking at somewhere around $17 million for the weekend (and I feel I’m being generous there) for a 67% drop from its opening weekend $51 million. So, sure, second place is nice, but what a dismal result and the fact it appears both of this weekend’s newcomers are going to have a hard time topping that is amazing.
In third on Friday is the new musical Rock of Ages with an estimated $5.35 million. With a “B” Cinemascore this is looking like a $15 million opener and New Line and Warner Bros. better hope the international take helps make up for that $75 million budget because it doesn’t look like domestic audiences are too interested.
In fourth is Adam Sandler‘s new R-rated comedy That’s My Boy, which should have brought in over $20 million along with Rock of Ages, but after $4.6 million on Friday a $14 million return is looking like the ceiling here. The “B-” Cinemascore isn’t exactly encouraging.
I have included Friday’s top ten directly below and will be back on Sunday morning with a complete weekend box-office wrap-up.
