Is it just me, or have most of the posters for The Amazing Spider-Man seemed a lot like the posters for the Sam Raimi films? Giant faces or man doing spidery things in the foreground with a cityscape in the background. Yes, the new ones have a blue tint instead of orange, but overall they don’t seem all that different. Perhaps this gets to the larger issue with the film, sight unseen, it doesn’t feel new. I know this is supposed to be a whole new franchise, but it doesn’t feel like it.
Still, a boy gets spider powers from a radioactive spider and has to fight a bad guy all while falling in love with the girl and then there’s Uncle Ben and Aunt May and doo, dee, da, da. Same. Oh, he’s got web shooters. My mistake. Different.
Yeah, tone has a lot to do with filmmaking, but if we’re going for a more serious superhero film than the three Raimi churned out, maybe going with a giant CGI lizard as your villain wasn’t the best move.
This, of course, is merely speculation without having seen the movie and only snippets of the trailer here and there. The film is, however, just around the corner so we’ll find out soon enough. For now, enjoy this new poster for The Amazing Spider-Man featuring both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. The film arrives in theaters on July 3.
