If You Had a Ballot: What Oscar Nomination Surprises Would You Offer?

I did this for the first time last year and the response was impressive and a lot of fun to read as we all pretty much realize the films, performances and technical proficiency we consider the best aren’t always what ends up getting a nomination at the Oscars.

So with my final predictions for tomorrow’s Oscar nominations posted and out of the way, it is now time to offer up your wishlist. We all know the Academy isn’t likely to nominate our favorite films of the year so here is your chance to buck the system and offer up your thoughts on where you know the Academy will most likely get it “wrong”.

For example, while there is a very slim chance Drive might get a Best Picture nomination I know Hanna won’t but it made my top ten along with films such as We Need to Talk about Kevin and The Adjustment Bureau. Don’t count on seeing those among tomorrow’s Best Picture nominees.

I recently posted my 2011 RopeofSilicon Awards where I named John Hawkes (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as my Best Supporting Actor and Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk about Kevin) as Best Director. Fat chance they’re nominated.

My favorite scores included Contagion, Attack the Block and Hanna. Again… good luck.

But what about you? What films from 2011 would you nominate that you know the Academy is likely to ignore? What performances, scores and screenplays?

And remember, we’re not talking wins, we’re merely talking nominations. Have at it in the comments below and remember there is no film not worthy of this discussion.

I will be here tomorrow morning, bright and early with the nominations where I don’t expect to hear any of the names I mentioned above, but will hopefully hear a few surprises.
