2012 Golden Globe Awards Live Blog: Winners and Commentary

[4:57:37 PM] Brad says: Nice, you made it.

[4:58:33 PM] Laremy says: I love page two! It’s so fancy over here!

[4:58:37 PM] Brad says: Commercial for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close just played. Go see it!

[5:00:26 PM] Brad says: Oh man, NBC is killing it by playing the countdown to the show start on the actual telecast.

[5:00:52 PM] Laremy says: What can I tell you about The Beverly Hills Hilton? Umm, that I prefer The Four Seasons?

[5:00:55 PM] Brad says: Ricky Gervais and his beer take the stage… Now what…

[5:02:03 PM] Brad says: Ricky Gervais, “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton… bit louder, bit drunker and more easily bought.”

[5:03:12 PM] Laremy says: Ricky Gervais starts out by burning The Golden Globes, as he should. We all agree on this. If you’re pulling down six and seven figures for acting then you can at least be humble and self-effacing. Trust me celebs, this is for the best.

[5:05:35 PM] Laremy says: He just went after Bieber! The gloves are off!

[5:05:36 PM] Brad says: Gervais: “Justin Bieber had to take a maternity test. What a waste that would have been. The only way he could get a woman pregnant is with a Martha Stewart turkey baster.”

[5:06:24 PM] Brad says: Gervais offers a “Boardwalk Empire” and Hollywood Foreign Press comparison… I think you’ll be able to figure it out.

[5:07:14 PM] Laremy says: I’ll be watching “Life’s Too Short” on HBO. I hope you’ll join me.

[5:07:37 PM] Brad says: Johnny Depp is your first presenter out and Gervais asks him if he’s seen The Tourist… the answer… “No.”

[5:08:07 PM] Brad says: Depp isn’t presenting an award, but simply introducing Hugo as one of the film’s Best Picture (Drama) nominees.

[5:08:56 PM] Laremy says: I mean, it’s not like you even could offend Johnny Depp. He’s Johnny freakin’ Depp! He gets paid quajillions to dress up like a pirate!

[5:09:20 PM] Brad says: Now Gerard Butler and Mila Kunis are out to present the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.

[5:09:46 PM] Laremy says: Supporting Actor time. Plummer, right? Gotta be. Chalk. Calling it.

[5:09:56 PM] Brad says: My pick was Christopher Plummer for Beginners, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Brooks win.

5:10:15 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role is Christopher Plummer (Beginners)

[5:11:49 PM] Laremy says: Christopher Plummer has now taken The Critics’ Choice and The Golden Globe. I’d opine his speech on Thursday night was better, as he mentioned he was “very turned on”. Very cheeky.

[5:11:54 PM] Brad says: Oh man, you don’t know how happy I am my code is working. At the push of a button we get Breaking News, a tweet and a highlighted post in the blog. What a great day! Now back to Plummer’s excellent speech. Nice to see him win.

[5:12:41 PM] Laremy says: Brad, can you get me some coffee? I’m in need.

[5:13:40 PM] Brad says: Ashton Kutcher and Elle Macpherson to present Best Actress in a Television Comedy or Musical

[5:14:07 PM] Brad says: I’ll guess Tina Fey

[5:14:26 PM] Laremy says: Nice site gag by Tina Fey. She’s a beaut.

5:14:31 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy) is Laura Dern (“Enlightened”)

[5:15:12 PM] Laremy says: Laura Dern is a great choice there, so long you’ve never watched 30 Rock or Parks and Recreation.

[5:15:18 PM] Brad says: Laura Dern wins? But she’s not Tina Fey or Amy Poehler! Oh, and I hadn’t heard of her show until last night. Sorry, not a big TV watcher.

[5:18:49 PM] Laremy says: How does the HFPA even watch the television shows? Screener copies? Can NBC afford to send them out?

[5:19:56 PM] Brad says: And we’re back with Julianne Moore and Rob Lowe out to present…

[5:20:12 PM] Brad says: … ugh, Miss Golden Globe. What is this even for?

[5:20:38 PM] Brad says: Oops, teleprompter malfunction and Julianne Moore gets some paper to read handed to her. Quality.

[5:21:07 PM] Brad says: Now the award for Best TV mini-series or movie.

[5:21:30 PM] Laremy says: The prompter just broke on Rob Lowe and Julianne Moore. Reminded me of that scene in Anchorman where they took away Ron Burgundy’s words. Solid production values, fellas!

5:21:50 PM: And the winner for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is “Downton Abbey”

[5:23:10 PM] Brad says: Elizabeth McGovern just fell on her way to the stage. This little segment needs to end… but congrats to “Downton Abbey”.

[5:23:47 PM] Brad says: Lowe and Moore will now present actress in a TV movie or mini-series

5:24:29 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television is Kate Winslet (“Mildred Pierce”)

[5:25:22 PM] Laremy says: Kate Winslet’s third Golden Globe, but her first for a show no one has ever seen.

[5:25:22 PM] Brad says: Congrats to Kate, I like her and thought “Mildred Pierce” was quite good.

[5:25:40 PM] Brad says: BTW, where did Ricky Gervais go? I need more jokes and insults.

[5:26:50 PM] Brad says: Playing Kate Winslet off the stage… Bye bye Kate.

[5:27:51 PM] Brad says: Freida Pinto out to present Midnight in Paris as a Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) nominee. She sure looks much better than she can act.

[5:30:49 PM] Laremy says: This is a true story: I saw Sir Ben Kingsley eating lunch at the Virgin America terminal in LAX on Friday morning. Now he’s at The Golden Globes. Did he fly away, and then come back? Why not just stay? Does he hate L.A.? I have only questions.

Hmmm, reading that back over I think it was just a chance for me to mention I ate fish n’ chips next to Ben Kingsley. Whatever. Only Gervais can judge me.

[5:32:43 PM] Brad says: The HFPA president will now tell us something with Jeremy Irons fondling her.

[5:32:55 PM] Laremy says: Hey, does the HFPA have a new president? Wasn’t it some guy who looked like a crypt keeper last year?

[5:34:08 PM] Brad says: Jake Gyllenhaal will now present My Week with Marilyn as a Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) contender.

5:51:43 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Drama) is Kelsey Grammer (“Boss”)

5:51:57 PM: And the winner for Best Television Series (Drama) is “Homeland”

5:52:13 PM: And the winner for Best Original Score is The Artist

5:52:37 PM: And the winner for Best Original Song is W.E.

[5:53:09 PM] Brad says: So sorry, but the server is getting hammered and will likely crash again soon. But for now, we’re back… for now.

[5:53:56 PM] Brad says: We’re at commercial and you haven’t missed much so I’m going to pop in a page break and we’ll continue on the next page.
