Von Trier Uses His Cannes Ban to Promote ‘Melancholia’ in New Posters

Empire has debuted six posters promoting Lars von Trier‘s Melancholia which I saw in Cannes (read my review here) and will hit theaters here in the States on November 11.

Of course, the big to-do surrounding Melancholia isn’t the film von Trier has made and it isn’t the fact Kristen Dunst was awarded Best Actress in Cannes for her performance, instead it’s the continuing news surrounding Cannes officials banning von Trier for comments he made during his press conference where he dug himself into a deeper and deeper hole after jokingly saying, “Okay, I’m a Nazi.” Things spiraled out of control and ultimately the fest declared him “persona non grata”, a badge of approval he apparently is embracing, having it stamped in the upper left hand corner of his poster below.

As for the film (as if it mattered any longer) here is the synopsis followed by the posters. If you haven’t yet watched the trailer you can do so right here.

Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgard) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth… Melancholia is a psychological disaster movie from director Lars von Trier.
