First Trailer for Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ Brings the Film Back into Focus Following Cannes Controversy

Awww, remember the time Las von Trier was Melancholia, due in theaters on November 11.

I saw the film at Cannes, where Kirsten Dunst won Best Actress, and opened my review saying, “Lars von Trier was bored and depressed and so he decided to make a movie.” I stand by that, and for that reason I will probably never return to this film again. I don’t think it has any grand ideas worth revisiting.

The film features Kirsten Dunst as Justine. It’s her wedding day, but she’s none-too-happy about it. So she pees on a golf course and has sex with a random in a sand trap. Oh, and a rogue planet is headed toward Earth ready to destroy the world. There is obviously more to it, and I went into greater detail in my review, which you can read here, but I’m not going to delve much deeper for the purpose of this post.

Instead I’ll offer you the trailer and the official synopsis below and let you have a peek and see what you think. You tell me, is it this, Immortals or Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill that you’ll be seeing in theaters on November 11?

Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth… MELANCHOLIA is a psychological disaster movie from director Lars von Trier.
