Resident Evil Trailer Offers Scariest Look Yet at Weapons’ Directors Zombie Video Game Movie

The official Resident Evil trailer is out, giving a terrifying look at the zombie movie from Weapons director. Resident Evil is based on Capcom‘s iconic, 30-year-old, survival horror video game franchise.

The official synopsis for the movie reads, “From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.”

Resident Evil trailer reveals Zach Cregger’s new survival horror story

The new Resident Evil movie is helmed by Zach Cregger, presenting the survival tale of a character named Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier. His life takes a haunting twist one night, forcing him to go face to face with the scary zombies.

The Resident Evil trailer looks gory, as it should be, while also teasing some interesting Easter Eggs from Capcom’s video game franchise itself. For example, the door opens in one scene, and a typewriter can be seen. Fans of Resident Evil would instantly recognize this from the games where the typewriter acts as a crucial method to save their progress during gameplay.

Interestingly, the trailer lacks any recognized Resident Evil character such as Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, or Ada Wong, but there’s a reason for it. Cregger said, “To try and shoehorn in any of those characters would feel inorganic to this self-contained story,” while revealing why he chose to ditch all iconic characters in his film. “I have to put the story first and foremost.”

The Resident Evil movie is written by Zach Cregger, in collaboration with Shay Hatten. Producers on the project include Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Victor Hadida, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Cregger. Oliver Berben, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacci are serving as the executive producers.

Besides Austin Abrams, the anticipated film also features Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser.

Resident Evil movie hits theaters on September 18, 2026.
