‘Inception’ Tops Motion Picture Sound Editors Awards

At the moment I’m predicting Inception will win both the Sound Mixing and Sound Editing Oscars next Sunday. Last night True Grit took home the Cinema Audio Society award for best sound mixing in a feature film, but tonight Inception was the big winner at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’s Golden Reel Awards.

Inception won for Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature Film and Music in a Feature Film. As far as the Oscar in the Sound Editing category is concerned, Inception will face off against Toy Story 3, TRON: Legacy, True Grit and Unstoppable, all of which were nominated tonight and none of which won.

Toy Story 3 was up for Best Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue and ADR in an Animation Feature Film and ended up losing to How To Train Your Dragon while Country Strong won for Best Music in a Musical Feature Film and The Social Network even got in on the act with an understandable win for Best Dialogue and ADR in a Feature Film (Ruby Skye scene anyone?).

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage won in the documentary category while Micmacs won in the foreign language category, which seems like an odd category to single out for sound editing, but oh well.

Additionally, Brian Grazer was the 2011 MPSE Filmmaker Award recipient and Walter Murch was the recipient of the 2011 MPSE Career Achievement Award.

I have included all of the feature film winners directly below along with the list of nominees and updated the Oscar Overture with Inception‘s latest win. The last guild award to be named will be the Costume Designers Guild on Tuesday, February 22.

All this week we’ll be discussing the Oscars and I’ll be breaking each category down with stats and predictions to hopefully help you win that office pool. So get ready for conversation in all the categories as well as user polls coming your way all week leading up to the Oscars next Sunday, February 27 when I’ll be here live-blogging the entire event with my co-hort Laremy Legel with live commentary and live winners. You really won’t even need to turn on your TV… We’re that riveting. See you then!
