So chalk up The Social Network for another critical win as the New York Film Critics Circle joins the ranks of the National Board of Review, Los Angeles Film Critics and Boston Film Critics awarding the film as the best of 2010. As it turns out, if The Social Network goes on to win Best Picture it will be the second year in a row New York and Los Angeles critics vote for the same film as the Academy after The Hurt Locker swept last year.
As for any surprises, I’d say Mark Ruffalo winning Best Supporting Actor for The Kids are All Right is the only real surprise as he beats out Oscar front-runners Christian Bale (The Fighter) and Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech). In all honesty the vote for Ruffalo seems like it’s the only spot on the list the NYFCC felt they could buck the system a bit and come across as different.
The choice for The Illusionist over Toy Story 3 isn’t all that surprising and like the Los Angeles critics before them, they select the predominantly English-language Carlos as their Foreign Language selection.
