‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4’ Mines ‘The Pillars of the Earth’ and Finds Sam Claflin

The latest role cast in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides belongs to Sam Claflin who was previously rumored to be competing for a role in the film with Max Irons, the son of the Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons. It would appear Claflin won out as he will star in the key role of Philip, a youthful missionary, a role said to be the film’s new male heart throb, sort of the new Orlando Bloom.

Claflin is pretty much an unknown entity, but like Hayley Atwell who was recently cast as the female lead in Marvel’s The First Avenger: Captain America, he too will be seen in the Canadian miniseries “The Pillars of the Earth” based on the Ken Follett novel alongside Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Matthew MacFadyen and Donald Sutherland. Pirates 4, however, marks his feature film debut. He joins previously cast Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Stephen Graham and Astrid Berges-Frisbey.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is set to begin filming in June and entirely on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles for a May 20, 2011 release.
