Dunst and Several Others Join the Cast of Von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’

I have a feeling the likes of Hayley Atwell, Chris Evans and the rest of the latest fleet of Marvel film actors signing nine-picture deals will all begin looking at Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire with envy. While the new batch of Marvel actors will be required to work tirelessly for less than they deserve on what essentially boils down to the same films over and over, Dunst and Maguire will begin exploring other options in their post Spider-Man careers, and it appears Dunst is taking a major step right out the gates as Deadline reports she has joined the cast of Lars von Trier’s hush-hush disaster feature Melancholia.

Also joining the previously cast Charlotte Gainsbourg, in what amounts to a major casting announcement, are Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgaard and Udo Kier.

The Deadline report doesn’t add any additional details to the story, which to this point we’ve heard it described as a psychological disaster film of which von Trier has promised “No more happy endings!” The plot appears to involve a planet crashing into Earth (or vice versa) based on the first released image.

The film is scheduled to shoot from July through September in Southern Sweden where it is said von Trier wants to make use of the Swedish summer light.
