Box-Office Wrap-Up: Oct. 16 – Oct. 18, 2009

Only alert commenter Jonh-PT was closer with his prediction, I guess he gets to tell us all “TOLDJA!” But I feel good about being within $1.2m, it was a tough weekend to predict.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 3 Weeks In A Row
They’ve got it getting murdered today, after putting up $24m on Friday and Saturday. Word has gotten out, it’s not for kids. It is for adults, but only certain adults. That $100m production budget is looking daunting right now. Obsessed open at $28m back in April and finished with $73m worldwide cume. This one will do better internationally (naturally) but you’d have to think $150m worldwide is a reach.
Result: 32.4 million (My rank: #1, $1.2m off)
On Thursday night Jimbo threw out a second place finish for Law Abiding Citizen, Athar joined him on Friday morning. I can’t give full credit to Athar due to the timing (get those predictions in as early as you can folks), but I can at least tip my hat respectfully. This fun little film performed well. It was completely illogical but it also had some nice action, solid leads, and an unpredictable story. Too bad it spotted Where the Wild Things Are 900 theaters or we would have had a real horse race.
Result: 21.2 million (My rank: #4, $9.6m off)
Almost $27k per theater, and it ended up beating Miley’s number last weekend. Astounding marketing work by Paramount, scoop up a great film and then let the fans do the campaigning. Very old school.
Result: 20.1 million (My rank: #2, $.3m off)
I had it falling 47.7 percent. And that’s exactly what it did. Thanks math!
Result: 17.9 million (My rank: #3, Dead On)
It did much better than I would have thought. Maybe there are a few Amber Heard fans out there?
Result: 12.3 million (My rank: #5, $3.5m off)
This was hurt a bit by Where the Wild Things Are. That had to frustrate them, because their movie was actually meant for kids.
Result: 8.1 million (My rank: #7, $.5m off)
This was hurt a bit by Law Abiding Citizen. You know they didn’t see that coming.
Result: 7.8 million (My rank: #6, $.9m off)
I think they should extend it even more. And could we be too far off from Monsters. Inc 3-D?
Result: 3.0 million (My rank: #8, $0.6m off)
I had it getting crushed. And it did, a very pleasing weekend all the way around.
Result: 1.9 million (My rank: #9, $0.1m off)
It was the best October weekend in box office history (not adjusted for inflation). Did you know that? You could look it up, almost $130m for the top twelve films.
Result: 1.9 million (My rank: #10, $0.3m off)

What do you make of the results? Am I being overly hard on Where the Wild Things Are? Did you buy a ticket to Law Abiding Citizen? Seen Paranormal yet? I leave it to you alert commenters, make us all proud.
