Box-Office Wrap-Up: Feb. 15 – Feb. 17, 2008

Yeah, Jumper won but the real story was Step Up 2 The Streets performing so strongly. The kids are starting to rule these early months.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Three Weeks In A Row
It was a little stronger than I thought. I’d predict a dismal second weekend except for the fact that basically nothing is coming out. Vantage Point will hurt it – but it won’t get rung up with a 60% drop like it deserves.
Result: 27.2 million (My rank: #1, $2.4m off)
I wish I’d had the courage to stick with my original projections which had this finishing second. My reasoning was that the teens love dance movies, especially opening weekend, but the popular reasoning was that it couldn’t do what the first one did. I guess they were sort of right, it was 5% lower than the first one’s opening weekend.
Result: 19.6 million (My rank: #3, $2.8m off)
I wonder if the actuals will come out a little stronger. Won’t more kids get to see this due to the holiday? I have more questions than answers here I guess.
Result: 19.0 million (My rank: #2, $3.5m off)
Wow. It should have dropped way harder. I can only blame women here. No way would a man sign off on seeing this. Blatant sexism? Check.
Result: 13.0 million (My rank: #4, $3m off)
Nailed it! I want to claim one small victory here – this beat Fool’s Gold in per theater average by about $200.
Result: 9.6 million (My rank: #5, $0.1m off)
The $1.4m I was off I want to attribute to hope. I always hope there are far less people who like bad comedy than there actually are.
Result: 8.8 million (My rank: #6, $1.4m off)
7. Juno
Ellen Page is hosting “Saturday Night Live” on February 29th! Now that’s something everyone can get behind, right?
Result: 4.6 million (My rank: #8, $1.0m off)
Oh please don’t make me talk about this movie anymore. Oh Please.
Result: 4.1 million (My rank: #9, $.8m off)
I spouted off on Thursday about the mathematical improbability of this faltering again. Thankfully, as I’m an idiot, I was proven wrong.
Result: 3.2 million (My rank: #7, $1.4m off)
I was $15k away from The Eye taking this. That’s less than 2,000 tickets in the entire country. C’mon God, hook this thing up when the actuals come out on Monday. Sheesh.
Result: 3.1 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
