Yuma beat me with a mighty $14 million dollar haul. Hats off, but clearly football and back to school were the priority for nearly everyone this weekend.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Zero Weeks In A Row
1. 3:10 to Yuma
The good news is that with dollar amounts this low I can’t miss by much on the total amount. This is like a 15% variance, good enough for a B grade in certain school districts.
Result: $14.1 million (My rank: #2, $2.2m off)
2. Halloween
Rob Zombie took a big header in weekend two. I’m sure there is a bigger lesson here about horror and drop-off but I’m too demoralized by the Dolphins losing to research it.
Result: $10.0 million (My rank: #1, $2.4m off)
3. Superbad
I’m actually thrilled to see this in the #3 spot, even if I was one off. Why? Because the film I had finishing in this place was one that I abhorred. Read on to solve that little mystery.
Result: $8.0 million (My rank: #4, $.5m off)
How did this only slip 49.9 percent?? That means that either quite a few people who saw it last week 1) Hate their friends (and thus didn’t tell them this was terrible) OR 2) died in fiery car wrecks (and thus didn’t get the chance to tell people it was horrible). I hope, for everyone involved, that it was the car wreck scenario, otherwise some of y’all should be ashamed.
Result: $5.6 million (My rank: #6, $.1m off)
This should pass The Bourne Supremacy on Tuesday… even though it was a slightly lesser film. Trust me, I did the research.
Result: $5.47 million (My rank: #5, $1.1m off)
6. Shoot ‘Em Up
Wow. What can you do besides chuckle? Shoot ‘Em Up was murdered in a most foul way. It wasn’t the sort of murder that was quick, either. More like a Hannibal Lecter style murder happening over here.
Result: $5.45 million (My rank: #3, $4.4m off)
7. Rush Hour 3
Nice pick by me. I get so little positive feedback that I’m forced to pat myself on the back far too often around here. I’m sorry you guys have to witness that. But I’m not sorry Rush Hour 3 won’t make it’s production budget back.
Result: $5.3 million (My rank: #7, $.4m off)
Another solid pick. A roll has been started. So what, my six week streak went down to an average western? I got the rest of this dialed in like pizza on speed dial.
Result: $3.3 million (My rank: #8, $.1m off)
Here’s some trivia about a movie no one will ever see: Laura Dern was terrible here too. Her, Giamatti, Scar-Jo, no one escaped alive.
Result: $3.3 million (My rank: #9, $.3m off)
10. Hairspray
I had Death Sentence in the ten spot. Hairspray has been out for two months so this was an upset. This flick is going to pass $150m with ease, so it’s probably among the top five winners of the year in terms of profit percentage. If only I’d invested that extra $5m I had in this instead of Rush Hour 3. I’d be on easy street.
Result: $1.9 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
