Wheras Anthony Minghella and his film Cold Mountain dominated the nominations for Golden Globes Minghella did not receive a nod from the Directors Guild of America which may spell a bad omen for the film and its chances for an Oscar.
Most of the nominations held tradtion with the majority of the nominations and and awards that have been handed out by a variety of critics circle save one surprise.
The five nominees for the DGA’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement this year are Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, Clint Eastwood for Mystic River, Peter Jackson for Return of the King, Peter Weir for Master and Commander, and the dark horse Gary Ross for Seabiscuit.
Seabiscuit has failed to see many noms this year in all the honors handed out and Gary Ross saw his chances just as Seabicuit did, “It’s obviously a cliché, but we always thought that we were something of a longshot because of [the movie being released] in July,” Ross told Variety.
This may be the start of further noms for the film, but being absent from a Globe nomination may not help. The Globes have seemed to be the catalyst for the Oscars spelling out the winners in a number of categories before the big show, but with the award show being earlier this year may be the change the film needs.
The winner of the DGA Outstanding Directorial Achievement will be named at the 56th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, February 7, 2004, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
