Anthony Hopkins won’t be needed this time to play Lecter as Dino De Laurentiis let’s the cat out of the bag at the Cannes Film Festival that a prequel even to the latest Red Dragon may be on the way.
De Laurentiis told Screen International that Thomas Harris, the author of the previous three Hannibal Lecter stories, has written the story for the producer and is likely to write the screenplay himself.
The script is set to be called The Lecter Variation, which is to be subtitled, The Story of Young Hannibal Lecter. It will follow the serial killers life from childhood and throughout his teen years De Laurentiis said, “Lecter was born into a very rich family but the war destroyed his family and killed his parents. He was left with his sister with whom he had a very close relationship.”
