After decades of fan speculation, it appears that Macaulay Culkin may indeed return in a new Home Alone sequel. Fans have wanted to see Culkin reprise the role of Kevin McCallister since the second film’s release. According to a new report, Culkin’s chances of finally returning to the franchise are looking bright.
In the July 28 episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni, the reporter said he received a tip about Culkin being seen on the Disney lot. Belloni said that Culkin has had talks with Disney about doing a new Home Alone film. Culkin is said to have brought an idea to Disney for the sequel that the company is “salivating” over.
“They’re offering him another movie, like he could do his own passion project if he would also do another Home Alone, and they have a good idea,” said Belloni about the film. However, the host also added that “there’s risk here” and the film “may not happen” should talks not go any further. He added that Disney is “courting him (Culkin) like it’s nobody’s business.”
It should be noted that Belloni called the film a “reboot” and not a definitive sequel to the originals. “I’ve talked to people who’ve heard it, and it’s a really good idea for a Home Alone reboot with Macaulay Culkin,” Belloni added.
Which other Home Alone Movies don’t star Macaulay Culkin?
Culkin starred as the lovable but mischievous Kevin McCallister in the first two Home Alone films. However, the actor did not return for subsequent sequels. Following Home Alone 2, the franchise released four other films, all without Culkin.
These include Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, and the 2021 Disney+ original feature film Home Sweet Home Alone. Last year, Culkin expressed interest in making a sequel where he battles his own son after being locked out of the house. “The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” said Culkin at the time.
Since directing the first two films, director Chris Columbus has been vocal about how the “bad” sequels were for the franchise. Columbus has also been against the idea of rebooting the franchise with Culkin.
It remains to be seen whether Disney and Culkin will come together for a new Home Alone film.
