Javier Bardem Reveals What Penélope Cruz Thinks of His Cape Fear Transformation

Penélope Cruz wasn’t fazed by Javier Bardem’s Cape Fear transformation

During the Cape Fear finale red carpet in New York City, Bardem told PEOPLE what Cruz thought about his epic transformation, right from changing his hair look to eye color. He said, “She’s kind of used to that. I mean, that’s what we do for a living. Another day in the office.”

He described portraying Max Cady as a “game” that required him to fully dedicate into the role for five straight months and be comfortable with it. He stated that though the character was born in Spain, he was raised by an American father, giving him a personality that’s a mix of two cultures. “So you have a flavor of them both, in the way he looks and the way he speaks. It’s all a game, and the fun part is when you play Max Cady, you have lots of things to play with,” he added.

The Before Night Falls actor further noted that playing Max Cady offered him an opportunity to explore different layers of the role. While he admits that it was an “intense” character to portray, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Cape Fear is a psychological thriller series based on John D. MacDonald’s novel, The Executioners, and the 1962 and 1991 films of the same name as the series. It centers around a happily married couple who are tossed into danger when a killer from their past makes an entry into their lives to seek revenge.

Apart from Bardem, the cast members include Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, Joe Anders, Lily Collias, CCH Pounder, and Malia Pyles.
