A 1989 Oscar-nominated baseball film starring Kevin Costner is set to leave Netflix soon. It follows an Iowa farmer who builds a baseball field that attracts ghosts of baseball legends.
Field of Dreams leaves Netflix in July
Field of Dreams will exit Netflix’s streaming platform on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
It is based on W.P. Kinsella’s 1982 novel, Shoeless Joe, named after the Major League Baseball (MLB) icon. It was the novelized version of Kinsella’s 1980 story, Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa.
Field of Dreams centers on Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer whose life changes after he hears a mysterious voice that encourages him to build a baseball diamond. Haunted by the memories of his strained relationship with his late father, a baseball enthusiast, Ray decides to trust the voice. With the support of his wife, Annie, he builds the pitch on a part of their cornfield. This attracts the spirits of several baseball players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson.
Phil Alden Robinson wrote the film’s screenplay and also directed it. It stars Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Timothy Busfield, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster, among others.
Released on April 21, 1989, Field of Dreams received unanimous praise, which also resulted in its commercial success. Critically, it currently holds an 88% Tomatometer score and an 86% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, 140K users on IMDb have rated it an average score of 7.5/10.
Made on a reported budget of $15 million, the film went on to gross $84 million globally. And at the 1990 Oscars, it earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Writing, and Best Music. However, it did not win any.
In 2021, Peacock announced that it would remake the film as a television series with Emmy-winning writer Michael Schur (The Good Place). The studio had reportedly set the budget at $15 million per episode with Chris Pratt as the headliner. However, after the MCU star walked away from the role, the studio scrapped the project (via Screen Rant).
