Backrooms Has Already Created A24 History in Only Its 2nd Weekend

A24’s newest horror hit just did something no other film in the studio’s history has ever done. Backrooms toppled the studio’s all-time box office record in its second weekend with staggering numbers worldwide.

Backrooms is already A24’s biggest movie ever, despite steep drop

Deadline reports that A24’s Backrooms became the studio’s highest-grossing movie ever in just 10 days of release. The Kane Parsons feature has amassed a running worldwide total of $212.6M across 52 territories. That figure unseats Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Supreme, which finished its global run at $191.2M.

The horror film earned $50.1M globally in its second frame, split between $25.9M domestically and $24.1M internationally. North America’s running total now stands at $135M, while international markets have contributed $77.6M. The second domestic weekend dropped 68% from its opening, reflecting the film’s fan front-loaded audience.

Notably, 81% of the second weekend audience remained under 35 years old, as per the outlet. The film ranked first in Spain by a huge margin with $2M over the weekend. It also posted A24’s best-ever opening weekend results in Malaysia and the Philippines.

Latin America is said to lead all territories with $24.2M. This makes Backrooms A24’s highest-grossing title ever in the region. The UK delivered $3M over the weekend, bringing its total to $11.6M. Australia and New Zealand passed Marty Supreme to reach $7.9M, while South Korea posted a big 11% drop for $5.7M overall.

The film stars Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, 21 Laps, Phobos, and Chernin Entertainment produced it alongside A24. The production budget reportedly came in under $10M, with a domestic marketing spend in the teen millions.

Marty Supreme previously took 53 days to take over A24’s former top earner, Everything Everywhere All at Once, which finished at $147.9M worldwide. Backrooms accomplished the same feat in under two weeks.
