The Monkey: Neon Acquires Stephen King Adaptation from Longlegs Director

Neon has secured the domestic rights for Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey, and looks to release the Stephen King adaptation next year.

Neon has a recent history with Osgood Perkins, having partnered for his upcoming Nicholas Cage and Maika Monroe serial killer horror Longlegs.

What is The Monkey About?

In The Monkey, twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic. A series of gruesome deaths start occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.

Stephen King’s The Monkey was first published in 1980. It was later revised and republished in 1985’s collection Skeleton Crew.

The Monkey is written and directed by Osgood Perkins, the son of Anthony Perkins. His directorial career has been very genre-focused, with intriguing movies such as The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel.

The film stars Theo James (Divergent), Elijah Wood (Come to Daddy), Tatian Maslany (She-Hulk), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), Christian Convery (Cocaine Bear), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).

Neon has been behind am eclectic, exciting mix of films in recent times, including Sydney Sweeney’s Immaculate, acclaimed animate feature Robot Dreams, and the Hunter Schafer-starring Cuckoo.

Neon is aiming to give The Monkey a 2025 release.
