The Deputy: William H. Macy, Tiffany Haddish, Julia Fox to Star in Crime Thriller

Highland Film Group has enlisted William H. Macy (Shameless), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), Stephen Dorff (Blade), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Jake Weary (Oh, Canada) and Duke Nicholson (Us) to join the cast of the upcoming action crime thriller titled, The Deputy.

The Deputy centers around a young officer who uncovers the corruption happening within the force after the dead body he’s guarding mysteriously disappears. The movie hails from Narcos co-creator Carlos Bernard (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), who wrote the screenplay based on Victor Gischler’s novel of the same name.

“In the film, part-time Deputy Toby Sawyer (Nicholson) is jolted awake by Chief Krueger (Macy) and assigned to guard a dead body until the coroner arrives,” reads the official synopsis. “When the corpse mysteriously vanishes, Toby launches a frantic search and unwittingly discovers decades of wrongdoing…and several cops who have turned a blind eye, including Deputy Billy Banks (Dorff) who pressures Toby to ignore his findings. Only Deputy Amanda Jackson (Haddish) appears trustworthy. Desperate to keep his job, Toby must unravel the town’s deep web of corruption before he and his career end up as dead as the missing cadaver.”

What to expect from The Deputy?

The Deputy will be directed and produced by Matt Sukkar, which serves as his feature directorial debut. It is produced by David Lipper, Robert A. Daly Jr, Mark Canton, Dorothy Canton, Ryan Winterstern, Hicham Benkirane, and Brendan Thomas. In addition to starring, Macy and Haddish have also signed on as executive producers alongside Bernard, Victor Gischler, Daisy Burnham and Highland Film Group. Production is expected to begin sometime in September.

“We are excited to be working with seasoned filmmakers with such impressive credentials as Mark Canton and Carlo Bernard. We are confident that The Deputy will deliver all the action and thrills Victor Gischler infused in his novel,” Highland Film Group COO Delphine Perrier said in a statement. “And it’s wonderful to be supporting Duke Nicholson as he launches his career – we believe he has a big future!” said Highland Film Group CEO Arianne Fraser. “We have a brilliant ensemble cast led by director Matt Sukkar, who will shine in this high-stakes thriller that follows a lone deputy fighting against a maze of betrayal and secrets, in the vein of Coen Brothers’ best movies. We can’t wait to bring this unique story to life through the collaboration of these talented artists.”
