Happy Gilmore 2 Confirmed by Netflix, Adam Sandler Will Return

Happy Gilmore 2 is officially happening.

Per Variety, Netflix has confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in the works. Adam Sandler will reprise his role as the titular character in the upcoming sequel, while further plot details remain under wraps at this time.

Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original Happy Gilmore movie, revealed in March 2024 that he’d seen a draft of the script for a potential sequel.

“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ’How ‘bout that,’ [and] he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2,” the actor said when appearing on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan. “Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit.”

When did the original Happy Gilmore come out?

Directed by Dennis Dugan, Happy Gilmore was released in United States theaters in February 1996. The film was a commercial success for Universal Pictures, earning approximately $39 million at the global box office off an estimated $12 million budget.

“All Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) has ever wanted is to be a professional hockey player. But he soon discovers he may actually have a talent for playing an entirely different sport: golf. When his grandmother (Frances Bay) learns she is about to lose her home, Happy joins a golf tournament to try and win enough money to buy it for her,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “With his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, Happy becomes an unlikely golf hero — much to the chagrin of the well-mannered golf professionals.”

Happy Gilmore 2 does not yet have a release date. Happy Gilmore, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Netflix.
