Radio Silence’s latest horror film, Abigail, appears to be set in the same universe as 2019’s Ready or Not. With almost the same premise of chases through gigantic mansions — complete with comedic elements against terrifying situations — Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s latest comments only suggest a stronger connection between the two features.
Now that a second Ready or Not installment is confirmed to be underway and that Abigail is now in theaters, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet have responded to questions from Collider about whether the two films really do exist in the same cinematic universe.
“There is a portrait in the background of one of the scenes [in Abigail] of [Ready or Not’s] Henry Czerny’s — well, Henry Czerny’s,” said Bettinelli-Olpin. Gillett then chimed in to clarify, “It would be a grandfather. A great, great, great, great grandfather.”
Bettinelli-Olpin continued, “There is a little bit of a tied universe to Ready or Not within the movie.”
Henry Czerny played Le Domas patriarch Tony, the owner of the Le Domas Family Games company. He starred in the 2019 horror comedy hit alongside Samara Weaving as Grace, Mark O’Brien as Alex, and Adam Brody as Daniel. The film follows the terrifying aftermath of Grace’s wedding, in which the rich family she just got married into tries to murder her over a sick family tradition.
Abigail, on the other hand, is loosely based on 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter. Starring Melissa Barrera, Kathryn Newton, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, and the late Angus Cloud, the film centers on a group of criminals holding a young girl hostage, only to find out that she is nothing as she seems. Similar to the 2019 feature, Abigail also boasts a grisly affair.
What is the update on the Ready or Not sequel?
Gillett recently confirmed in an interview with EW that the script had already been written, promising that the second outing would be “an absolute f—ing banger.” Following the success of the first film, it was also reported last month that Searchlight Pictures would proceed with the second. However, it is reported that Escape Room director Adam Robitel will be directing the sequel instead of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet.
Weaving’s return has not been confirmed, but given her well-received portrayal of Grace, there is a good chance she will reprise the role. Aside from Ready or Not 2 being confirmed to be on the way, other details about it remain under wraps.
