Love Lies Bleeding Is Similar to Saint Maud, According to Director

At first glance, Love Lies Bleeding and Saint Maud don’t share anything in common. However, for director Rose Glass — who helmed both features — her 2019 psychological horror and the upcoming romantic thriller are more similar than audiences might think.

While speaking with TotalFilm, the director said that there are “parallels” between Love Lies Bleeding’s Jackie (Katy O’Brian) and Saint Maud’s titular reclusive nurse (played by Morfydd Clark).

“There are parallels between Jackie’s character and Maud,” said Glass. “They’re both trying to transform themselves, and arguably not in the most responsible ways.”

Love Lies Bleeding, which is set to hit theaters on March 8, will center on the budding romance between rising bodybuilder Jackie and introverted gym manager Lou (Kristen Stewart). But their relationship will be put to the test when they get entangled in some of Lou’s family’s criminal affairs, sending them both into a downward spiral.

Saint Maud, on the other hand, follows young nurse Maud, who is assigned to look after a retired dancer diagnosed with cancer. Having recently pursued a religious faith, things soon take a horrifying turn when Maud begins to obsess over saving her ward’s soul from an eternity in hell.

Both films hail from A24, making Love Lies Bleeding Glass’ second collaboration with the independent entertainment company.

Who else is involved in Love Lies Bleeding?

Apart from Stewart and O’Brian, the upcoming romantic thriller also stars Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Anna Baryshnikov (Dickinson), Dave Franco (Nerve), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show). Glass directed the film from a screenplay she co-wrote with Weronika Tofilska. Executive producers are Daniel Battsek, David Kimbangi, Susan Kirr, and Ollie Madden, with Andrea Cornwell and Oliver Kassman producing.
