Abigail Directors Apologized to Actors Over the Movie’s Copious Amount of Blood

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo known as Radio Silence, apologized to the stars of Abigail over how much blood is used in the movie.

Speaking with Total Film Magazine, the Abigail directors revealed that their upcoming horror flick is “definitely” their most bloody movie to date.

“All of our movies are bloody,” Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett said. “[But] I would say that this is definitely the most bloody. We spent a lot of time apologizing to our actors on this movie!”

They added, “I mean, blood is in the DNA of a vampire movie, and the amount of blood work in this one is… It’s pretty extreme! But it’s still fun.”

Prior to Abigail, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett made 2014’s Devil’s Due, 2019’s Ready or Not, 2022’s Scream, and 2023’s Scream VI. They also directed segments of 2012’s V/H/S and 2015’s Southbound.

What is Abigail about?

“Children can be such monsters. After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.”

Abigail stars Melissa Barrera (Scream, In The Heights), Dan Stevens (Legion, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), William Catlett (Black Lightning), Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Angus Cloud (Euphoria), Alisha Weir (Matilda: The Musical), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian).

Chad Vilella produces the movie alongside William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, James Vanderbilt, and Tripp Vinson. Ron Lynch and Macdara Kelleher serve as executive producers, while the script was written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick.

Abigial opens in United States theaters on April 19, 2024, from Universal Pictures.
