28 Years Later Cillian Murphy update

Cillian Murphy on 28 Days Later Horror Sequel: ‘Watch This Space’

Cillian Murphy is teasing some exciting developments regarding the upcoming sequel to 28 Days Later, 28 Years Later.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy was asked if there’s anything he can divulge about the upcoming 28 Days Later sequel he’s working with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland on.

“It’s for them to speak about, I suppose, but I think it’s been brewing for a while,” Murphy said. “The first movie was so important for me, as an actor. I love working with those guys. Alex has an idea.”

He added, “And Danny directing is just huge. Watch this space.”

What do we know about 28 Years Later?

In January 2024, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Boyle and Garland are collaborating on 28 Years Later. The two previously worked together on 2002’s 28 Days Later, which was directed by Boyle, written by Garland, and starred Murphy.

28 Years Later is intended to kickstart a new trilogy of movies, with Boyle attached to direct the first installment and Garland attached to write all three.

On January 31, THR reported that Murphy is returning as an executive producer to 28 Years Later. He could also potentially reprise his role from the first movie, though this has also not been confirmed at this time.

A sequel to 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, was made in 2007, though Boyle and Garland had little involvement with the film. Murphy also didn’t return to star in 28 Weeks Later, as the cast instead included Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, and Robert Carlyle.

A release date for 28 Years Later has not yet been set by Sony. 28 Days Later is not currently streaming on any platforms in the United States, while 28 Weeks Later is available to watch on Hulu.
