I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter: America Ferrera Sets Directorial Debut at Orion Pictures

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures is currently developing a film adaptation of Erika Sánchez’s I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter novel, with Golden Globe winner America Ferrera attached to direct.

Should the project score an official greenlight, this would mark Ferrera’s feature-length directorial debut, after previously directing episodes of Superstore and Gente-fied. For her performance as Gloria, Ferrera recently received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

What is I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter?

“It follows Julia Reyes, a teen with a sharp tongue, a fierce wit and big dreams of becoming a famous writer, somewhere far, far away from Chicago and her traditional Mexican immigrant parents who just can’t understand her love for Whitman, Dickinson and the Ramones,” reads the synopsis. “They wish she was more like Olga, Julia’s sister, now eternally perfect since her tragic death. As Julia seeks to break free of her oppressive home, she tries to uncover her sister’s truth, and in the process gains a deep understanding of the wounds her family carries.”

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is being written by Linda Yvette Chávez, who previously co-created and executive produced Netflix’s Gentefied series with Ferrera. The film adaptation will be produced by Doreen Wilcox Little, Charles D. King and Poppy Hanks, and David Kuhn, with Sánchez and Greta Talia Fuentes serving as executive producers. It hails from MACRO Film Studio, Aevitas Creative Management and Anonymous Content.
