To celebrate Groundhog’s Day, Paramount released a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 video teasing a different Shadow.
Additionally, Variety confirmed that star Jim Carrey will return as Doctor Robotnik. Carrey had previously played the villain in the past two movies, but his teased retirement put his return in doubt. Now fans won’t have to worry as the iconic comedic actor is set to reprise the role.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. Ben Schwartz is set to reprise his role as Sonic the Hedgehog. Details on the plot are sparse, but it will feature Shadow the Hedgehog — Sonic’s speedy rival who first appeared in the 2001 Sega Dreamcast game Sonic Adventure 2.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was also directed by Jeff Fowler, who made his feature directorial debut on the hit predecessor. The film earned a worldwide gross of over $400 million at the box office against a reported $90-110 million budget.
In addition to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount Pictures is also currently developing a spin-off series centered around Elba’s Knuckles, which will debut on Paramount+.
