Martin Scorsese Becomes Most-Nominated Living Director, Passing Steven Spielberg

Martin Scorsese has now earned more Oscar nominations than any other living movie director.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese’s Best Director Academy Award nod for 2023’s Killer of the Flower Moon has scored him his tenth official Oscar nomination. He now passes Steven Spielberg, who previously held the record with nine nominations.

Scorsese has only won the category once for 2006’s The Departed with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson, while Spielberg has won it twice for 1994’s Schindler’s List and 1999’s Saving Private Ryan.

William Wyler, who passed away in 1981, holds the overall record, as he was nominated 12 times. Wyler won the award three of those 12 times for 1942’s Mrs. Miniver, 1946’s The Best Years of Our Lives, and 1959’s Ben-Hur.

Scorsese’s other Best Directing nominations include 1981’s Raging Bull, 1989’s The Last Temptation of Christ, 1991’s Goodfellas, 2003’s Gangs of New York, 2005’s The Aviator, 2012’s Hugo, 2014’s The Wolf of Wall Street, and 2020’s The Irishman.

Who else was nominated for Best Director at the 2024 Academy Awards?

Justine Treit (Anatomy of a Fall), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) are all competing against Scorsese for the 2024 Best Directing Academy Award. The winner will be announced on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

Killers of the Flower Moon also earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture (Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Scorsese and Daniel Lupi, Producers), Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert De Niro), Actress in a Leading Role (Lily Gladstone), Cinematography (Rodrigo Prieto), Costume Design (Jacqueline West), Film Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker), Music (Original Score) (Robbie Robertson), Music (Original Song) (Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People), music and lyrics by Scott George), and Production Design (Production Design: Jack Fisk; Set Decoration: Adam Willis).
