New Star Trek Movie in the Works From Andor Director, Set Before J.J. Abrams Film

Andor director Toby Haynes has been tapped to direct a new Star Trek movie for Paramount.

Per Deadline, Haynes is directing a new Star Trek film set within J.J. Abrams‘ Kelvin Timeline. The movie is being written by Seth Grahame-Smith (The Lego Batman Movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), while Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time; however, Deadline’s article says the film is reportedly an origin story set decades before the events of Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek movie.

“Insiders add that the final chapter in that main series, Star Trek 4, remains in active development,” the article states.

In addition to directing six episodes of Disney+’s Andor, Haynes has directed episodes of Netflix’s Black Mirror, Prime Video’s Utopia, BBC’s Sherlock, and more.

J.J. Abrams, Star Trek, and The Kelvin Timeline

Abrams boarded Paramount’s Star Trek franchise in 2009 with the Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto-starring movie. Bringing in approximately $385.7 million at the worldwide box office, the movie also starred Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Leonard Nemoy.

Abrams returned to direct a sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, in 2013, which made even more money at the worldwide box office ($467.4 million) but received more mixed reviews from fans and critics alike compared to the first film.

A third film, Star Trek Beyond, followed in 2016. Fast Five’s Justin Lin took over directing duties on Star Trek Beyond, while Abrams remained onboard as a producer. Star Trek Beyond marks the latest entry in the Kelvin Timeline; however, Paramount has been plenty busy releasing an abundance of other Star Trek titles, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and more.

Paramount’s new Star Trek movie does not yet have a release date. The first three Star Trek movies set within the Kelvin Timeline are all currently streaming on Paramount+.
