This Is Spinal Tap 2 to Begin Filming in Early 2024 With Paul McCartney, Elton John

This Is Spinal Tap 2 is headed into production in 2024.

Per Variety, the long-awaited sequel to 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap will begin filming in February 2024. Rob Reiner is returning to direct the movie, and he recently revealed on the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast that Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks will also play a role in the sequel.

Reiner is also reprising his role from the first movie alongside Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer.

What else do we know about This Is Spinal Tap 2?

This Is Spinal Tap 2 was officially announced in May 2022. Reiner said at the time, via Rolling Stone, “When it was announced that Spinal Tap would reunite for one final concert, Marty DeBergi saw this as a chance to make things right with the band who viewed This is Spinal Tap as a hatchet job. So he left his position as visiting adjunct teacher’s assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts in pursuit of film history.”

The sequel was originally supposed to be sold at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and was eying a March 2024 release date; however, production was delayed because of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes.

Co-written and directed by Reiner, This Is Spinal Tap wasn’t a huge box office hit when it hit United States theaters in 1984. The movie’s home video release, however, brought more attention to it. Having received a cult following, This Is Spinal Tap is now considered by many to be one of the most influential mockumentaries ever made. It was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2002 for being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress.

This Is Spinal Tap 2 currently does not yet have an official release date.
