Golden Globe Awards Add New Categories for Blockbusters and Stand-Up Comedians, Details Revealed

The Golden Globe Awards has officially added two new categories catered toward blockbuster movies and stand-up comedians.

Exclusively reported by Variety, the 81st annual edition of the Golden Globe Awards will introduce two new categories to the 2024 ceremony: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

What titles are eligible for the Golden Globes’ new awards?

A total of eight films can be nominated for the former of the two awards. In order to qualify, movies must make more than $150 million during their release. Additionally, at least $100 million of that $150 million must be made at the United States domestic box office. Films nominated in this category can also be nominated for Best Picture in their respective categories (drama, comedy or musical, animated, and non-English language).

Streaming movies can also receive the award; however, their eligibility will be determined by viewership data from “recognized industry sources.”

Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, meanwhile, is dedicated to comics or ensemble troupes who perform traditional stand-up for at least 30 minutes on television. Roles in television series, limited series, anthology series, or motion pictures will not be considered for the award, and the programs must have first aired in the United States. The category will accept a total of six nominees.

“The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we’re thrilled to honor their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year,” Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne said. “Additionally, we are proud to recognize the hard work and innovation that goes into making a film that is both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional.”

The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024, while nominations will be announced on December 11, 2023. Glenn Weiss is directing the show and executive producing it alongside Ricky Kirshner.
