We Can Be Heroes 2 Receives an Update From Robert Rodriguez

It has already been over two years since Netflix confirmed the development of We Can Be Heroes 2. Director Robert Rodriguez has finally revealed an update about the long-in-development superhero sequel. Speaking with Collider, Rodriguez said he wants the sequel ASAP. The Spy Kids filmmaker also confirmed that the sequel’s story will feature a time jump showcasing the main characters’ growth in their skills as superheroes.

“The bigger rush is to do a sequel for that because of the kids growing up. Although the script always kind of took that into account, they’re supposed to be kind of next-level,” Rodriguez explained. “And I like the idea of kids seeing their favorite characters grow so exponentially on screen, and it makes them realize how time works to go. It makes them go, ‘Oh yeah, Guppy [Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s daughter] was this age in the first movie. I’ve been watching it again and again, and now she’s already…’ They can picture themselves growing and developing and their brains expanding in leaps and bounds like that. So I think the time works in our favor.”

Who was the cast of We Can Be Heroes?

We Can Be Heroes starred YaYa Gosselin as Missy, Pedro Pascal as Marcus, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Ms. Granada, Christian Slater as Tech-No, Boyd Holbrook as Miracle Guy, Christopher McDonald as Neil Anami, Adriana Barraza as Anita Moreno, Vivien Lyra Blair as Guppy, Isaiah Russell-Bailey as Rewind, Akira Akbar as Fast Forward, Lyon Daniels as Noodles, Nathan Blair as Wild Card, Lotus Blossom as A Capella, Hala Finley as Ojo, Andy Walken as Wheels, Dylan Henry Lau , Andrew Diaz as Facemaker, Sung Kang as Blinding Fast, Haley Reinhart as Ms. Vox, Brittany Perry-Russell as Red Lightning, and Brently Heilbron as Crushing Low.

“When alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes, their kids are whisked away to a government safe house,” reads the synopsis for the first installment. “But whip-smart tween Missy Moreno will stop at nothing to rescue her superhero dad, Marcus Moreno. Missy teams up with the rest of the superkids to escape their mysterious government babysitter, Ms. Granada. If they’re going to save their parents, they’ll have to work together by using their individual powers — from elasticity to time control to predicting the future — and form an out-of-this-world team.”

We Can Be Heroes was written and directed by Robert Rodriguez. It served as an unofficial sequel to 2005’s The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, with original star Taylor Dooley reprising her iconic role.
