The Passion of the Christ 2 Is ‘Like an Acid Trip,’ Says Mel Gibson

In a recent interview, Oscar winner Mel Gibson has opened up about The Passion of the Christ 2, confirming that the long-in-development sequel to his 2004 biblical drama is finally “coming soon.” On why the project took nearly a decade to develop, Gibson explained that the sequel is “such a massive undertaking” that you can’t do “lightly” and quickly” because “you have to really consider what it is that you need to show in order to be poignant.

The Braveheart star also confirmed that he currently has two scripts for the project, which he has been co-writing with Randall Wallace. “I have two scripts and one of them is very structured and very strong script and kind of more what should expect and the other is like an acid trip,” Gibson teased. “Because you’re going into other realms and stuff. I mean you’re in hell and you’re watching the angels fall. It’s like crazy.”

What to Expect in The Passion of the Christ 2?

The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection will once again be directed by Gibson. The sequel is expected to feature Jim Caviezel as he reprises his role as Jesus, whose miraculous resurrection will be the center of the next installment. Production will reportedly begin this year.

The Passion of the Christ depicted the final days of Jesus Christ’s life and his crucifixion. In addition to Caviezel, it starred Maia Morgenstern as Mary, Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, Francesco De Vito as Peter, Luca Lionello as Judas, and more. The film made $612 million on a budget of $30 million, establishing it as an enormous financial success. Critical reception was mixed, with critics being split on the brutal depiction of the crucifixion and some accusing the film of being anti-Semitic.
