Jonathan Majors Trial Sets August Date After Actor Appears in Court

A date for Jonathan Majors‘ court case for his domestic violence charges have been set, with Variety reporting that the date has been set for later this year.

Majors appeared in a lower Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday morning for the first time in the case’s history. In a brief proceeding that followed, a judge set his trial to begin on August 3, 2023. According to the report, Majors appeared alongside his girlfriend, actress Meagan Good, and briefly spoke with the bench before the proceedings.

After his appearance in court on Tuesday, Majors’ defense lawyer Priya Chaudhry issued a statement, continuing to claim Majors’ innoncence in the matter and noting that they’ve requested a trial date as soon as possible in the hopes of everything being dropped.

“We strongly requested the District Attorney dismiss all charges against Mr. Majors immediately and initiate proceedings against Ms. Jabbari, holding her accountable for her crimes,” Chaudhry said. “While we are hopeful that the District Attorney is reviewing these materials in good faith and will do the right thing soon, to accelerate our case, we’ve requested a trial date ASAP.”

What are Jonathan Majors’ charges?

Jonathan Majors is facing three counts of third-degree assault, second-degree aggravated harassment, three counts of third-degree attempted assault, and second-degree harassment stemming from an incident in March in which he’s accused of assaulting a 30-year-old woman. Police cite that Majors allegedly struck “[the victim] about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.” Additionally, he allegedly grabbed her hand and neck, “causing bruising and substantial pain.”

A previous report from ABC News notes that Majors made the 911 call himself, which police responded to. The call was “purportedly over concerns about his girlfriend, whom he lives with in a penthouse apartment in the Chelsea neighborhood.” After police arrived, the girlfriend told officers they were in a taxi together after returning from a bar and that Majors physically attacked her. Majors was then arrested after police noticed marks on the woman.

Majors’ criminal defense lawyer previously stated that Majors is “provably innocent” and expects charges to be dropped due to multiple witnesses and written retractions from the victim, followed by a later claim that there is video evidence of Majors’ innocence.
